Monday Club Votes To Aid Charity Work

Mrs. E. W. Cumings Is Hostess for Meeting
______
Authorization for the payment of
donations to the Community Chest and the Girls’ Friendly Society were the
only departures from routine business at the regular meeting of the Woman’s
Monday Club, held at the home of Mrs. E. W. Cumings yesterday afternoon.
Feature of the entertainment program
was a paper on “Ports and Maritime Activity,” prepared and read by Mrs. A.
M. French. Mrs. French outlined the history of efforts to bring deep water
here, described the set-back plans were given by the storm of 1919, and
painted a comprehensive picture of the importance of shipping to Corpus
Christi’s development.
Regular two-minute talks on Art,
Music and Americanization were given by Mrs. Wm. Gerhardt, Mrs. Carrie
Lichtenstein and Mrs. E. B. Neiswanger.
Mrs. Gerhardt discussed the South
Texas Art League, and the work of local artists. She described and praised,
among others, paintings by Emily Rutland and Antonio Garcia which were hung
at the Texas Centennial Exhibit in Dallas.
Mrs. Lichtenstein commented on a
recent radio program sung by Lily Pons. Mrs. Neiswanger read a collection
of definitions of “Americanism.”
Mrs. Lottie Hackler presided for
Mrs. Frank DeGarmo, club president who was confined to her home with
influenza. Mrs. C. C. Stone and Mrs. Philip Garret, of the Hospitality
Committee, assisted the hostess at a refreshments table decorated with
silvered foliage.
Guests were Mrs. Mary Mathis, Mrs.
Boatwright, Mrs. Kerr and Mrs. W. E. Pope.

“Idiot’s Delight” Out-lined by Miss Mai F.
Hunter

Members of the Woman’s Monday Club
gathered for their regular meeting yesterday at the home of Mrs. C. W.
Skipper, and to hear a review of Robert Emmert Sherwood’s Pulitzer Prize
play, “Idiot’s Delight,” by Miss Mai Frances Hunter. Hostess to the meeting
was Mrs. S. W. Rankin, assisted by Mrs. J. A. Hill and Mrs. C. C. Stone of
the hospitality committee. Mrs. Frank de Garmo presided.
Other features of the program were:
A brief outline of the program of primitive Mexican art by Mrs. J. B.
Hubbard; a paper, by Mrs. J. A. Hill, on the value of pageantry as a medium
for the Americanization of aliens; and a discussion, by Mrs. R. R. Banner of
Lauritz Melchor, the Danish Wagnerian tenor.
The meeting heard a report on the
election of Mrs. F. A. Tompkins to honorary life membership in the Texas
Federation of Women’s Clubs. Mrs. Tompkins’ membership was proposed by Mrs.
R. R. Turrentine, state president of the federation, and seconded by the
entire board of directors.
Following the program refreshments
were served.
Guests were Mrs. Herman Eastland of
Houston, Mrs. Billy Haymann, Mrs. Louis Carter, Mrs. C. W. Skipper and Mrs.
