CONCERNING THE NEW PRESIDENT.
______
Mrs. G. R. Scott, the newly-elected
President of the Fifth District of the Federation of Women’s Clubs of Texas,
is the wife of Judge G. R. Scott of Corpus Christi, one of the foremost
members of the Texas Bar. She was the founder of the Woman’s Monday Club of
Corpus Christi, twelve years ago, and was president of that organization
continuously up to the 14th of February of this year, when she
resigned. Upon the formation of the City Federation of Women of Corpus
Christi, Mrs. Scott was elected President of that organization, and has
given much of her time and attention to its success.
Mrs. Scott is full of resources and
her energy is unlimited. She has not and always has had an abiding faith in
the future of Corpus Christi, and much of this city’s progress is due to her
efforts and the estimable ladies associated with her. She is enterprising
and public-spirited, and many times has expressed the hope that she may live
long enough to see Corpus Christi the cleanest, most healthful and most
beautiful city in Texas..

Victoria, Tex., May 6.Mrs. G. R. Scott of
Corpus Christi was unanimously elected President of the Fifth District of
the Federation of Women’s Clubs of Texas. She had no apposition, Mrs. Eli
Hertzberg of San Antonio deciding not to enter the race.
Other officers elected were as
follows: Mrs. A. B. Petticolas of Victoria, first vice-president; Mrs. R. S.
Hyer of Goliad, second vice-president; Miss Kathleen Jones of corpus
Christi, secretary and treasurer. Mrs. Lee Joseph of Cuero, retiring
president, was elected delegate to the biennial conference. Mrs. James
Waelder of Victoria, alternate. Mrs. S. J. Wright was endorsed as State
president.
Immorality in Drama Condemned.
The women in a resolution expressed
their disapproval of immorality in the drama and its deterioration and
embodied in that resolution a determination to work for the purity ad the
uplift of the stage in which was also included the moving picture shows.
the entire session was marked by the
utmost harmony and good will. Much business was transacted with rapidity
and precision.
Speeches and Ovation.
The Federation closed at noon today
and most of the delegates will leave at once ____ their homes, while a few
will remain at Victoria as guests of friends. Before adjournment speeches
were made by Mrs. J. S. Hyero and Mrs. Wm. Gerhardt of Corpus Christi. Mrs.
Lee Joseph was given an ovation at the close.

Corpus Ladies Honored.
Mrs. Lee Joseph of Cuero was elected
president of the Fifth District Federrated Women’s Clubs at the session held
at Goliad Wednesday. The other officers elected were: Mrs. G. R. Scott,
Corpus Christi, first vice president; Mrs. S. L. Moore, Goliad, second vice
president; Miss Annie Breeding, Cuero, secretary and treasurer. Georgetown
was selected for the place of next meeting. When the clubs were called to
order this morning the delegates and visitors filled the Presbyterian
church. The invocation was offered by Rev. J. M. Linn. Following the
invocation an address of welcome on the part of the citizens was made by G.
E. Pope. He was followed by Mrs. R. L. Pettus, who welcomed the visiting
delegates on behalf of the local clubs. Response to the addresses of
welcome was made by Miss Lorine Jones of Corpus Christi.
NOTES.
Mesdames G. R. R. Scott, Henry
Redmond and W. B. Hopkins returned last night from Goliad where they
attended the fifth district meeting of Women’s clubs and report a most
enjoyable meeting and the citizens of Goliad were most lavish in their
hospitality. The reports from delegates from all parts of the district
showed an advancement along all the lines of work undertaken by the women’s
clubs.

are spending a few days in Beeville en route from the Goliad meeting.

Woman’s Club Urges Expert City Planner
Committee Will Be Named By Group and Petition
Is to Be Presented Soon to City Councilmen.

The Woman’s Monday club, at a
meeting held March 18, adopted a resolution authorizing the appointment of a
city plan committee by that organization which will obtain the interest of
federated clubs in Corpus Christi and present a petition to the city council
requesting that body to secure the services of an expert city planner
immediately.
The resolution adopted by the clubs
follows:
“Whereas, Mayor Lovenskiold recently
stated that he would rely upon the club women of Corpu sChristi to assist in
inaugurating a movement for securing a city plan and a master planner for
the city of Corpus Christi; and,
“Whereas, the women of Corpus
Christi have always stood for the highest and best interests of the city and
knowing this movement to be the best forward step of progress for Corpus
Christi;
“Therefore, be it resolved, that the
Woman’s Monday club appoint a city plan committee whose duty would be to
secure the interest of all federated clubs in the city and present a
petition to the honorable mayor and commissioners requesting them to secure
the services of an expert planner immediately for the economic, social and
commercial welfare of our city.”
The committee appointed by the club
to carry but the terms of this resolution is composed of Mrs. Frank A.
Tompkins, Mrs. G. R. Scott, Mrs. Henry Redmond, and Mrs. William Gerhardt.
